Public Policy

Influence On behalf of the sporting goods industry, SGMA has successfully lobbied Congress and Administration officials for a century, fulfilling our mission as the Voice of the Industry on Capitol Hill. SGMA's Board of Directors and Government Relations Committee serve as the guiding bodies for policy and oversight. Both committees are comprised of executives from member companies representing all sectors of the sporting goods industry. Specifically, the Government Relations Committee meets to establish and review industry public policy priorities and initiatives, both recurring and emerging.

Working hand-in-hand with our members to develop a sound position and industry representation, SGMA has worked to:

  • provide funding programs for better physical education
  • protect and preserve national, state, and local parks and recreation space
  • generate awareness and action to help our nation become healthier and more active
  • identify and address labor violations, and improve labor rights in a global economy
  • develop standards and safety guidelines for sports equipment
  • create new sports organizations, including specialty-sport trade organizations and leagues
  • fund reinvestment programs for our member companies to distribute among local communities
  • effectively represent the U.S. industry with international agencies, foreign governments and sports governing bodies
  • Promote policies to ensure protection of trademarks, patents, and copyrights on sporting goods/fitness and exercise equipment, athletic apparel and footwear
  • advocate for new approaches to traditional business expenses to reduce operating costs and taxes
