Team sports
have a vast appeal for young people. This may be why over 29 million
6-17 year-olds
participate in team sports according to previous SGMA research. In
recent years
it was noted that team sports participation was consolidated among the
most
serious players, revealing a decline in casual, pick-up players for a
substantial increase in organized team sports. Baseball participation
has
remained relatively stable due to large community-based youth leagues,
while
basketball has not had the same consistency. In high schools, soccer
became the
most rapidly growing sport even with the explosive increase in
lacrosse, which
expanded more than five-fold between 1990-91 and 2007-08 for boy’s and girls’ teams. In addition, even with
soccer and lacrosse on the rapid rise, football remained the most
popular sport
in high school, college, and beyond. But does this information still

today? Has the stable participation in baseball collapsed? Or did
soccer take a
back seat to a new escalating high school sport? Just like
fashion, weather, or even our economy, participation in team sports
varies from
year to year and decade to decade. Learn the most up-to-date
information on
team sports in the 2009 edition of SGMA’s U.S. Trends in Team Sports
